About
About Romeo Festi
Senior software engineer · Beekeeper · Brewer · Linux & e-commerce platforms
A 15+ year career in backend software engineering, Linux infrastructure, and e-commerce platforms, alongside practising beekeeper since 2002 and brewer since 2020, with hands-on apiculture in Italy and international field experience. Structured, test-driven delivery in IT pairs with careful observational work in the apiary and brewery — patience, systems thinking, and respect for living processes.
Tech lead — Magento 2 / Adobe Commerce
The Site Up · May 2023 – present · Padua, Italy (hybrid / remote)
Technical lead across multiple Magento 2 / Adobe Commerce Cloud platforms (B2C and B2B), including yamamotonutrition.com, ibisb2b.com, and spidi.com.
- Technical analysis, architecture and code review across custom modules and third-party integrations.
- Backend engineering: catalog / EAV, Hyvä storefront and Hyvä Checkout, promotions, ERP / PIM / marketplace / payment integrations.
- Cloud project management: environments, deploy / post-deploy pipelines, incident response, capacity and cache tuning (Varnish, Fastly, Redis / Valkey, OpenSearch, New Relic).
- AI-first delivery: Cursor + LLM workflows for module generation, refactoring, debugging and automated test authoring — with unit, integration and E2E gates so Magento upgrades stay routine.

Beekeeping & apiculture
Independent beekeeper — Italy
2002 – present (ongoing alongside professional IT work)
- Hive management, seasonal workflows, queen rearing awareness, health monitoring, and harvest of honey and pollen.
- Long-term commitment to sustainable, attentive apiculture — balancing production with colony welfare and local ecology.
Field apiculturist — Hawaiian Queen Bee Company
2013 · Big Island, Hawaii, USA
- Seasonal work with a commercial queen-bee operation: colony handling, breeding-program support, and day-to-day tasks in a tropical, high-intensity apiary environment.
- Practical skills in large-scale queen production; adapting quickly to different climates, flora, and working standards.
Agriapistica Alpina — founder
Pieve di Bono-Prezzo · pollinefresco.com · giustoacquisto.com
- Beekeeping (2003 – present): honey, pollen, hive management and direct sales.
Brewery
Drink responsibly — that is a must. If you show up drunk or with alcohol problems, you get no beer.
- Brewer / craft brewery (2020 – present): beer and mead; production and promotion alongside apiculture.
- Brewery automation (2022 – present): design, write and test OpenPLC programs (Structured Text and ladder) for plant process control on ~500 L tanks — reservoir / vessel level supervision, alarm latching with reset and acknowledge, cooling and heating permissives, and shared pump-demand arbitration. Pair that with a Python companion service over Modbus for operator UI, thermostat setpoints and live status, bench-validated against a Linux OpenPLC runtime before field-controller deployment.

Hobbies & Sport
I have always been passionate about sport. As the years stack up I still bike in the mountains — and I love music and dancing.
Ethics
I am a USI–AIT union member (Unione Sindacale Italiana, Milan). Solidarity, workplace dignity and collective organisation matter to me as much as technical skills.
I look for — and try to contribute to building — work environments where people are treated fairly, can speak up, and ship careful software without burnout. Must be present: respect for colleagues, honest communication, and a culture that values people over heroics.
AI is already impactful. We are still adapting, and we do not yet know how far the impact will go — but consequences show up already in the quality of work available to young professionals. That is largely unspoken. Too many seniors are trapped in an ego that blocks any fair organisational discussion about how to value and protect juniors entering the craft.
Unlike many other sectors, IT has historically never faced mass job-loss phenomena — mostly reallocations. If the current AI trend holds, I expect more than today’s freeze on hiring in software development (as soon as managers understand what AI can do): real, impactful job loss. Relocation into neighbouring roles may still be decent for some; payrolls, in my view, risk a so-to-say race to the bottom.
Technological unemployment is a phenomenon that in the 20th century affected other sectors, not IT: now IT itself is affected.
The art I like very much is this
